Samos: Backpacking

The Greek Islands have long been a favourite location for backpackers, who hop on and off ferries to access the islands. Backpacking in Samos is no exception. In low season (October-May) you can bargain rooms down to as little as €20 for a double room in Samos Town. While high summer brings many package tourists to resorts around the pretty port towns of Vathi and Pythagorio, there is space too for independent travellers seeking to get away from it all. Samos boasts great beaches, hiking and coastal roads.

Late September is ‘off’ season for almost all beach resorts, which means that you won't have a problem finding cheap rooms. Check beforehand for small cities, as some hotels might be closed during low season. Greece is not hostel-orientated. There aren’t youth hostels in Samos. However, private rooms are the cheap alternative as are budget hotels, a few of which offer shared rooms or dormitories. Prices start from €14.
