Peru Food Guide - Dining Out

Peruvian cooking offers diversity and excellent value for money. With each of its regions having its own style of cuisine, you may want to sample the local fare in situ if you intend to travel around. Wherever you go, eating out in Peru provides excellent value for money. You can eat at some of the country’s best restaurants, for example in the stylish Miraflores district of Lima, for as little as £20 per person. When even one of the most expensive meals at the Rosa Nautica restaurant costs around £35 per person including wine, there will be plenty of gourmet fare to choose from.

There are plenty of eating options for those on a smaller budget too. You will find medium priced restaurants offering meals for around £5.50 upwards in Lima and cheaper fare in other parts of the country. Budget restaurants and fast food outlets are easy to find too. You can often fill up at lunchtime (the main mealtime in Peru) for as little as £2 to £3 in many cafes and cheaper restaurants. If you feel like something a little different, why not try a Chinese meal? Peru’s larger towns and cities have an abundance of Chinese restaurants. Tallarines (noodles) are a filling, and cheap, option in most Peruvian Chinese restaurants. Of course, you may prefer to savour local delights and delicacies. The main ingredients found in nearly every Peruvian dish are rice, potatoes, chicken, pork, lamb, and fish/seafood.

Most Peruvian meals include one of the different kinds of aji, Peruvian hot pepper. Chicken, pork and lamb were introduced to Peru 500 years ago, when Spaniards came to South America. Other ingredients, like potatoes, originated in the Peruvian Andes and were taken by the Spaniards back to Europe. In the Lake Titcaca area, you will find over 200 varieties of potato, which can vary in colour from purple, blue, yellow and brown. Their sizes, flavours and textures vary enormously. You will find many fascinating culinary experiences in Peru!
