If you want to go horse riding in Penang, you can hire a horse for an hour or two on the beach at the popular coastal resort of Batu Ferringhi. Horses can be found outside the Lone Pine and Golden Sands resorts. As with many things in Penang, prices are negotiable, and not unreasonable. A word of warning – make sure that you get a horse to match the abilities of the rider! If you’re a less confident rider, ask the owner if you can go for a beach ride at dusk as it much quieter then and you can get a good gallop going. This isn’t always possible during the day as the beach can be fairly crowded with sunbathers, and the horses are too hot to canter in the heat of the day.

If you want to see horse racing in Penang, then head to the Penang Turf Club at Jalan Batu Gantung. At weekends when racing is taking place at Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, the turf club is open for ‘off-course’ betting.
