Masai Mara: When to go

The ultimate safari experience

Masai Mara When to go

The best time to go to the Masai Mara is during the great migration, which is from July to October. This is when it is dry and the grass in the Masai Mara is long and lush. This is the time to come to the Masai Mara to see the great herds of wildebeest and zebra. The presence of so many herbivores also brings out the predators, such as lion, leopard and cheetah. The rainy season in the Masai Mara is during April and May and November, when parts of the reserve become inaccessible due to thick, sticky mud.

However, there will still be plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities and the cost of accommodation will be cheaper. If you are worried about visiting the Masai Mara in the hottest months, opt for the cooler months of June and July. The main tourist seasons in the Masai Mara are from December to February and from July to August. January to February is hot and dry and best for game spotting, and the Masai Mara is at its greenest and most beautiful from March to October.
