Hostels in Malaysia

Malaysia is a member of the International Youth Hostel Federation and has a decent range of available hostels. There are not many youth hostels in the more remote areas of the countryside and smaller surrounding towns, but they are very cheap. Accommodation is in dormitories and meals can be arranged in some of the more established premises. There are many diverse and excellent hostels in Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Penang and Petaling Jaya. There are also subsidised, moderately priced and locally-run motels that are most reminiscent of English bed-and-breakfasts. They are basic, but always clean and comfortable, with full facilities and usually good restaurants close by. As they are primarily travelling inns they tend to fill up quickly, so it is advisable to telephone and reserve a room. As long as you are willing to remain within the environs of the larger cities and towns in Malaysia’s surrounding hinterland, there are many good to great hostels awaiting holidaymakers and backpackers on a budget.
