Cannes: Golf
Pearl of the French Riviera
Golf in Cannes is enjoyable year-round due to its smooth winters. Although there is no golf course in Cannes downtown, Cannes is considered as a high spot by golf lovers, with plenty of golf clubs in the surroundings. The most prestigious is the Golf Old Course de Cannes-Mandelieu, located across the mouth of the small River Siagne about seven kilometres west of Cannes - south of the A8. It has a 18 holes 5867 metres Par 71, a 9 holes 2409 metres Par 33 and a practice ground putting green. In 1891, The Grand Duke Michael of Russia, returning from St Andrews in Scotland where he discovered the game of golf, decided to create a golf in Cannes between the sea and the river Siagne, the Cannes-Mandelieu Golf Course designed by Harry Colt. The setting was ideal, featuring a forest of huge umbrella pine-trees more than a hundred years old. The crossing with the river Siagne with a barge while playing your game is still to this day a unique feature. During the winter, the sea breeze mixed with the pines and the mimosas leave a fragrance never to be forgotten. The highlight of this beautiful place is the Norman style Clubhouse/Fine dining, well-protected by a strong and very old umbrella pine-tree overhanging the roof through centuries.
