Canary Islands: Geography

The Canary Islands is the only place in Spain where volcanic eruptions have been recorded during modern times, ie since European discovery. Tenerife is where you will find the highest mountain in Spain, the Teide volcano, which is also the third largest volcano on Earth on a volcanic ocean island. Depending on where the islands are positioned with respect to the north-easternly trade winds, the climate in the Canary Islands can be mild and wet or very dry. Several native species form the laurisilva forests.
