Boston: Introduction

Boston is a city jam-packed full of history, culture and entertainment. It has a distinctly traditional feel to it, but with a modern edge. Boston’s position on the East Coast has had a major impact on the city you see today.

Boston has been the setting for some of the most important moments in American history, including the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. Its location made it one of the first landing points for the British settlers, who then transformed it into a thronging harbor.

This, in turn, attracted more visitors, and increased the wealth of the area, all hallmarks which are recognizable today. Boston is one of the most expensive places to live in the United States, but also one of the nicest. There is a strong Irish community, dating back to the first settlers, but also a substantial student presence, thanks to the city’s highly respected universities.

Boston is not short of entertainment. The city offers a wide range of professional sport. Take your pick from baseball, basketball, American football, hockey and soccer. Fenway Park is one of the most impressive stadiums in baseball and no trip to Boston is complete without taking in a Red Sox game here. Boston also boasts a thriving music scene, rip-roaring comedy clubs and several theatres.

Shopping in Boston is refreshingly spread out, and less mall-based than in some American cities. Boston truly has something for everybody and is a city that must be explored, so it is best seen on foot.
