Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas and its largest city (pop. 260,000); home to around 80% of the nation’s 330,000 inhabitants. The vast majority (85%) of the Bahamas are of African origin, while the remainder are of European descent. There are also smaller ethnic Asian and Hispanic communities. The Bahamian people are quite religious, and comprised of various, mainly Christian, denominations. The economy of the Bahamas is largely based on tourism, followed by financial industries, such as off shore banking. It has the third highest per capita income in the western hemisphere, trailing only Canada and the United States.
