Austria’s famous ski resorts turn into mountain escapes in the summer and are therefore popular all year round. The trendiest Austrian resorts that will offer you excellent winter and summer activities include Kaprun, Kitzbuhel, Mayrhofen, Bad Gastein, Schladming, Soll, St. Anton and Zell am See. All these resorts pride themselves in attracting vast numbers of tourists and are a great choice for anyone happy to follow the crowd in exchange for a ‘full monty’ of facilities. You’ll find these resorts have excellent pistes in the winter, and lovely mountain trails in the summer. Organised sporting activities take place twelve months a year and the après-ski, resort entertainment and culinary choices are very much geared towards the tourist. If, however, you fancy going to a smaller ski resort, where the après-ski is not quite so lively, you will probably discover a little more of traditional Austria. Smaller Austrian resorts such as Zurs am Arlberg, Fieberbrunn and Velden, boast equally excellent activities and countryside, but the atmosphere is more sedate, with very friendly and hospitable locals.
