Most visitors will be staying at least one night in Nairobi before heading to the Masai Mara. The best way to get from Nairobi airport to your hotel is by taxi. Before you travel, make sure that the taxi driver is licensed and knows where your hotel is! If there is no meter in the taxi, agree a price before you get in the taxi.

Prices for car hire in Nairobi start at around 30 euros a day, and more than three times that for a four-wheel drive vehicle. Unless you are planning to drive only in cities, car hire companies will usually not let you hire a 2WD car. Entry into some parks is forbidden without a 4WD vehicle, and the drive to the Masai Mara, which can take five hours – up to 7 in the rainy season – is quite rough on the last half of the drive. Insurance for hire cars can be pricey, and excess can range from KSH2000 to 150,000. If you are driving a car through the Masai Mara, it is possible to hire a Masai guide for about KSH 200 a day from some of the larger campsites in the national reserve.

Drivers licenses requirements?
Most car hire companies in Kenya expect drivers to be 23 and over and have two years driving experience. As long as your driving licence is valid and you have held it for at least two years, it is valid in Kenya.
Rules
Kenyans drive on the left-hand side of the road. There are no rules about drinking and driving in Kenya. In the Masai Mara, you must be off the roads by 6.30pm, and rangers do enforce the rules. In non-residential areas, speed limits are 120kph (75mph) and 60kph (35mph) in built up areas. It is compulsory to wear a seat belt and obligatory that all vehicles carry two red triangles to be placed 20m (66ft) in front and behind the vehicle in the event of a breakdown.
Buses
There is no public transport within the Masai Mara, but you may find yourself in a bus as part of a safari package. It is possible to book a trip to the Masai Mara from Mombasa and the beach hotels, if you have arrived in Kenya with no preparations made. A three-day trip is likely to cost around £400 .
