Internal Flights and Major International Airports in Stockholm

Stockholm is serviced by Arlanda International Airport (ARN) about 40 km north of the city, and the smaller Bromma Airport (BMA) located about 10 km to the west of central Stockholm. Arlanda serves most international flights, while Bromma is mainly domestic, with some short flights within Europe. Also nearby are Skavsta and Västerås, each located 100 km from Stockholm, to the southwest and west, respectively, and are used by low cost airlines such as Ryanair and Wizzair.

Getting to and from the Airport in Stockholm

Taxis from major taxi companies operate on a fixed price basis between Arlanda and central Stockholm. Prices at the taxi stands are around from 40-45€ and take roughly 40 minutes. With some companies, you can get a lower price if you pre-book your ride. Airport shuttle buses operate from some hotels for around 17€. Another common way is to take the airport coach service which runs from Stockholm City Terminal (next to the central train station) to Arlanda for about 10€ and to Bromma for around 7€. Coaches to Skavsta and Västerås airports cost about 13.50€. Another option is the Arlanda Express train from Stockholm Central Station, which costs around 21€ and takes only 20 minutes. Keep in mind that in Sweden, all public transport options have considerable discounts for child, youth, student, pensioner tickets.

Car Hire in Stockholm

There are several companies from which to rent cars while staying in Stockholm. Rates are from about 215€ per week for a compact car. Car hire offices, or pick up/drop off points are at all airports and several downtown locations. It is advisable to book well in advance.

Drivers License Requirements in Stockholm

To drive in Stockholm and Sweden you must be of at least 18 years of age and have a valid drivers license from your country of origin or residence. Licenses from all EU countries are valid in Sweden and an international or US driving license may be used for up to six months.

Stockholm by Bus

Bus services in Stockholm are run on an integrated system in conjunction with Stockholm’s metro (Tunnelbana), local trains (light rail) and ferries, under the banner of SL (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik). It has recently become possible to buy Stockholm bus tickets from automated machines featuring normal, 24 hour (9€), 72 hour (18€), weekly (23€) and monthly (61€) tickets. Prices are based on zones, so the farther you travel, the more you pay. Bus travel in Stockholm can get quite expensive, with 1.80€ being the cheapest prepaid ticket, but zone fares or “kuponger” (2 per zone) get less expensive if you buy 16 (8 journeys within one zone) at once. Stockholm’s metro or “Tunnelbana” is a modern and convenient system, similar to other metros around Europe, serving central and greater Stockholm. Metro services in Stockholm are run on an integrated system in conjunction with Stockholm’s buses, local trains (light rail) and ferries, under the banner of SL (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik). Tunnelbana stations are recognizable by the large “T” above their entrances. It has recently become possible to buy Stockholm metro tickets from automated machines featuring normal, 24 hour (9€), 72 hour (18€), weekly (23€) and monthly (61€) tickets. Stockholm by Taxi

Taxis rides in Stockholm are quite expensive and prices are not regulated. Major operators such as Taxi Stockholm,Taxi Kurir, and Taxi 020 will at least have fixed rates. Rates can be around 9€ for a very short trip. All licensed taxis have yellow license plates and are metered. There are also very many illegal, unlicensed taxis operating in the center of Stockholm, particularly at night, which will charge around the same rate as the licensed taxis. It is always advisable to take licensed cabs and also to ask for an estimate before starting your journey.

Water Transport in Stockholm

Stockholm water transport consists of the ferries going to Djurgården and Skeppsholmen, which are part of SL public transport system and therefore use the same tickets and passes as metro, light rail and bus travel. Other water transport in in Stockholm includes ferries to various locations further out in the Stockholm Archipelago, which are not included in the SL collective traffic system, as well as ferries to Finland, Latvia and Estonia.
