Kenya is not awash with bed and breakfast accommodation as you might see in the UK. However, there are some guesthouses to choose from, which offer bed and breakfast accommodation. Apartments

Apartments in Masai Mara

There are no holiday apartments in the Masai Mara itself, but if you are staying in Mombasa as part of a two-centre trip including a beach holiday and safari trip in the Masai Mara, there are apartments available. However, what is called an apartment in Mombas is more akin to a beach bungalow. An apartment with two bedrooms, set in a tropical garden within walking distance of the ocean is likely to cost just £150 pounds a week for four people. If you are staying in Nairobi before or after your Masai Mara safari, an apartment can be an economical option, especially if there are four of you on holiday. Expect to pay around $70 a night.

Self Catering Accommodation

Self Catering Accommodation in Masai Mara

There are public and private campsites in the Mara triangle in the Masai Mara. The three public campsites are at Oloololo Gate, Iseiya Camp and also Eluai Camp near the Mara Serena airstrip. The Oloololo site is the only site with showers and toilets. No booking is required at these sites, and there are camp rules that must be followed to ensure safety and sustainability of the environment, including no night game drives, staying within 25 metres of the site and no bathing in the river – very sensible really!

There are also private sites that can be booked online for 7,500KSh a week. There are other sites around the Masai Mara, but few are listed on maps and they can be pretty basic and not very safe. Ask at the camp gates for more information. It is also possible to book three-day budget camping trips, which include tents, a guide, food and park fees for around £400.

Lodges in Masai Mara

Most accommodation in the Masai Mara is available in safari lodges or camps, which provide luxury tents or ‘bungalows’, along with food and game drives. Extras often provided in the cost of your accommodation in the Masai Mara may include ‘sundowner’ drinks, private verandahs, escorted walks and spa treatments, depending on how much you are paying. There are unusual camps such as Cottars 1920s Safari Camp, with authentic canvas tents, 1920s safari furniture and old-fashioned service, which include the attentions of a butler!

Luxury lodges may have four-poster beds, offer haute cuisine, and serve dinner at the waterside, while you watch hippos wallow in the river. Prices vary enormously, but none come particularly cheap. Expect to pay from around £150 a night up to anything around £900 a night. However, remember these prices usually include everything from your food, to laundry and game drives.
